Animals Have Rights, Too

Animals kill for food, but some men kill just for the pleasure of it.

In the early days, men and friends lived harmoniously. When man began to travel to other places, their savage ways became even more pronounced. The lion and the lamb lie together no more.

Any harm done to another is a bad thing and no excuse is acceptable. All the religions teach that God loves all His creatures and wants them to live in harmony. A basic Hindu teaching declares that everything and everyone, even animals are parts of the One Supreme Being, and that all men and animals are brothers.

Just by looking at animals, we realize that we are not at all so different from them. They feel, display joy and anger, laugh and cry when they are hurt, express their love or hatred, in fact, all the human qualities. As fellow-creatures of the same God-Father, animals are our brothers and we men are morally bound to respect their animal rights. Yet, man does the exact opposite. We would not want to be forced to do anything against our will, or be tortured or killed without our express permission, but we subject animals to unspeakable terror and suffering in total disregard of their animal rights.

Advocates of animal rights are lobbying for the enactment and enforcement of laws that would regard animals as legal persons thereby acknowledging their God-given animal rights that everyone must respect. Because of their continued initiatives, some laws relating to animal abuse, illegal hunting especially of endangered species, trapping, trafficking and others are already in force, but more of these are needed.

There used to hordes of large and small animals roaming the plains, but indiscriminate killings have reduced their numbers. Man’s continued abuse has decimated our wild animal population, this to our great loss. In this world, God has created us superior to our fellow-brother-creatures but at the same time, He has tasked us to care for them and protect them. Instead, we inflict all kinds of harm on animals in direct disregard of our avowed duty.

There are many instances. Since the very beginning, animals have worked hand in hand with men. Many billions of ants aid in decomposition, cultivate the soil and kill harmful pests and help in increasing crop yields. Bats, bees and other insects pollinate plants and scatter them all over many places, the plants in turn provide us the food we eat. Bees also produce honey. Cattle provide us with milk and cheese products. Birds also do us a great service by helping to pollinate plants and disperse their seeds, decimate insect pest population and recycle nutrients. While dogs and cats entertain and amuse us. Other dogs serve as lifeguards, help hunters find their prey, shepherd sheep and cattle or otherwise help in farmwork.

In appreciation, many are now actively involved in various animal care and animal rights programs.

Come everyone and give your share to this worthy endeavour.
